Susan Capalbo has been at Oregon State University since 2008 as Department Head and Professor in Applied Economics. Prior to coming to OSU she was a Professor at Montana State University, a Fellow at Resources for the Future, and a visiting ADVANCE Fellow at Columbia University. Dr. Capalbo served as the Chair of the Steering Committee for SP3.0 (2013-2014) and co-chaired the Provost’s Self-Study Committee on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (2011-2012). She also chaired the 2010 review of the HMSC and is a part of the MSI working groups. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences’ Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources. She earned her BS and MS in resource economics at the University of Rhode Island.

Dr. Capalbo’s career has reflected a commitment to mentoring faculty, to undergraduate and graduate education and to applied research. She currently teaches a capstone class for undergraduate majors and has been an advisor for PhD and MS graduate students. Her research focuses on applied economics and policy as it relates to sustainable agriculture and resource management, climate change adaptation, and integrated policy analysis and tradeoff assessment. She was a co-lead on the 2014 National Climate Assessment report for the PNW and is currently the co-PI on a USDA NIFA grant addressing adaptation of cereal production to climate change and on a USDA National Needs Fellowship grant to support graduate education. Dr. Capalbo has been a strong proponent of advancing women in research and leadership. As the Director of Special Projects in the MSU VP Research Office, she initiated research internships for undergraduate women interested in STEM fields and was PI on several diversity and social science research collaborative grants including an NSF ADVANCE Leadership Award.
