Mike Bailey is a Professor of Computer Science at Oregon State University. His areas of interest include computer graphics, scientific visualization, and CPU/GPU high-performance computing.
Mike received his PhD from Purdue University in Computer Graphics and Computer Aided Design. He has held positions at Sandia National Laboratories, Purdue University, Megatek Corporation, the San Diego Supercomputer Center, and the University of California San Diego.
Mike has been active in university service including being a faculty advisor to student groups and a member of the Computer Science Curriculum Committee, the Engineering Promotion and Tenure Committee, the university-wide Curriculum Council, the Faculty Senate, and the Faculty Senate Executive Committee (EC). In 2015, he was the Faculty Senate President.
Mike derives great satisfaction from teaching and has taught a variety of college classes to almost 8,500 students. He has won 11 university teaching awards and two outreach awards. He has also presented numerous technical papers and short courses at a variety of conferences and workshops.
Mike is an active participant in K-12 outreach, especially with historically underserved populations, having worked with organizations such as Girl Scouts, San Diego Supercomputer Center Minority Science Scholars, STEM Academy, Advocates for Women in Science, Engineering, and Math (AWSEM), the Oregon Game Programming Challenge (OGPC), ChickTech, Discovering the Scientist Within, SuperQuest, and Science and Math Investigative Learning Experiences (SMILE). He is currently teaching multiple classes of 2nd-5th graders how to do computer programing and 3D graphics.
Mike has served on a number of conference committees, including chairing the ACM-SIGGRAPH (Association of Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics) conference and the IEEE (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Visualization conference. In 2015, ACM-SIGGRAPH awarded him its Outstanding Service Award.
