Oregon State colleagues,
Shortly, Washington State University will announce the appointment of Dr. Mitzi Montoya as their next Provost and Executive Vice President, effective August 1.
I offer my warm congratulations to Mitzi on this appointment and thank her for her many contributions while at Oregon State. I also wish her every success with this next step in her career as a higher education leader.
Dr. Montoya joined Oregon State as the Sara Hart Kimball Dean of the College of Business in August 2015, and has served as co-administrator for the OSU Portland Center since November 2017 and Executive Dean of the Division of Business and Engineering since July 2018.
Dean Montoya’s signature efforts at Oregon State include an innovative reformation and expansion of the college’s curriculum to emphasize experiential learning, entrepreneurial thinking, and practical professional skills development. She expanded the scope of a dedicated living-learning community to include all first-year students, revamping the curriculum to immerse students in active business learning from day one. She also launched InnovationX, the university-wide Center of Excellence for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, that nurtures entrepreneurial ventures and business start-up sustainability for undergraduate and graduate students. During her time here, Dean Montoya also grew the college’s design and technology capabilities with expanded makerspace resources that are freely accessible to students.
Dean Montoya launched the Center for the Advancement of Women in Leadership, a university-wide initiative to ensure that OSU students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of our broader community are prepared to be leaders who advocate for women in the workplace. Additionally, she helped launch a headquarters for the College in Portland, in part to offer hybrid online/face-to-face MBA and undergraduate programs to meet student and business community needs and demands in the region.
Beginning this week, I will consult with the College’s faculty and staff on the appointment of interim leadership, prior to commencing a national search for a new dean.
In the coming weeks, we will announce an opportunity to celebrate Mitzi’s contributions to Oregon State. In the meantime, please join me in congratulating Mitzi on her appointment as Washington State’s Provost.
