Dear OSU Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to share with you that Dr. Richard (Rick) Settersten will begin his appointment as Oregon State University’s Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs on Aug. 1.

Dr. Settersten is University Distinguished Professor of Human Development and holder of the Barbara Knudson Endowed Chair in Family Policy. He is currently head of the School of Social and Behavioral Health Sciences in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences and founding director of the Hallie Ford Center for Healthy Children and Families.

Before coming to OSU, Rick was professor of sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Case Western Reserve University. He received his Ph.D. in human development and social policy from Northwestern University and held postdoctoral appointments at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Education in Berlin and the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern.

As Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, Rick will oversee university-level programs to build and support an outstanding and diverse faculty; programs and initiatives to develop and support academic leaders; implementation of the university's strategic plan; development and implementation of OSU’s internationalization strategies; university policies and procedures; and faculty personnel matters and labor relations.

As staff and close partner to the Provost, the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs oversees a wide array of special projects and initiatives. Portfolios and related staff reporting to Rick will include university policies and standards; international engagement; faculty and leadership development; and, in partnership with University Human Resources (UHR), labor relations.

Please join me in welcoming Rick to his new role and thanking Dr. Susan Capalbo for her many years of service leading the Office of Faculty Affairs.

Sincerely,

Edward Feser
Provost and Executive Vice President
