Dr. Scott Reed, Vice Provost for University Outreach and Engagement and Director of OSU Extension Service, announced today that he will retire from the University at the end of July 2019.
Scott joined OSU in 1990 and served in various College of Forestry roles, including professor, executive associate dean, and extension program leader. In 2005, he was appointed Dean and Director of OSU Extension Service. Two years later, he became the University’s first Vice Provost for University Outreach and Engagement, a division that brought together OSU Extension Service, Extended Campus and other programs.
Under Scott’s leadership, Extended Campus grew from a small unit to a top-10 national leader in online education, delivering more than 50 degree and certificate programs to learners in all 50 states and more than 50 countries. Scott has led local, state and national efforts to make OSU’s 107-year old Extension Service more responsive, innovative and engaged. He pioneered Open Campus, linking educational resources to advance college and career readiness, degree completion and community economic development throughout Oregon. In 2017, Scott won the 2017 Ruby Award from Epsilon Sigma Phi, a national Extension honor that recognizes truly outstanding thinking, performance and leadership. Based on the confidence of voters and the legislature, significant new funding was directed to Extension in 2017 to create the nation’s first Outdoor School for all fifth graders.
Scott has served as a valued member of the University’s leadership team. He has contributed in countless ways to the success of OSU and to learners across the state of Oregon. We look forward to celebrating his many accomplishments in the spring.
We will launch a national search to fill the Vice Provost/Director position shortly, informed by consultations with faculty, staff and stakeholders. Your nominations for Vice Provost/Director position are welcome, and may be emailed to Gigi Bruce, special assistant to the provost.
