Dear OSU Colleagues,
It is my pleasure to announce the appointment of Dr. Tuba Özkan-Haller as acting dean of the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) beginning Aug. 9.
As you are aware, Dean Roberta Marinelli will soon begin a temporary post as director of the National Science Foundation’s Office of Polar Programs (OPP). Over the next year, she will lead OPP into a new era of polar research in the context of the Earth as an integrated system.
Following several listening sessions, individual meetings, and a call for written input from the CEOAS community regarding the opportunities and challenges facing CEOAS in the coming year, including the skills and experiences needed in acting leadership for the coming year, it became clear that Tuba is an excellent choice for this assignment.
Tuba celebrated her 20-year OSU anniversary this week. She presently serves as associate vice president for Research Administration and Development and professor in the colleges of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences and Engineering. She previously served as CEOAS Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Advancement.
Özkan-Haller has led the Office of Sponsored Research and Awards Administration and has guided building the university’s research development capacity and providing strategy to meet the needs of OSU’s growing research enterprise. As a faculty member, she focuses on attaining a predictive understanding of the nearshore ocean including forecasting waves, circulation, and coastal change on beaches, inlets, and estuaries. Nationally, Tuba has served for two terms as a member of the Ocean Studies Board of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) and has chaired or participated in various NASEM studies. She has recently also been selected to serve on NOAA’s Hydrographic Survey Review Panel starting January 2022.
Tuba is a recipient of the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, an Outstanding Faculty Member Award at the University of Michigan, as well as a Pattullo Award for Excellence in Teaching and Woman of Excellence Award at OSU. She holds a B.S. in civil engineering from Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey, and a M.C.E. and Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Delaware.
