Democracy in Action Lecture Featuring Patrick Deneen

May 2, 2025

Dear OSU Community,

Please join me for the third and final installment in the 2024-2025 Democracy in Action: A Lecture Series on American Pluralism, featuring Patrick J. Deneen. This event will be held in Lynne Halstrom Detrick Concert Hall in PRAx on Tuesday, May 13 at 5:30 p.m. and streamed live online.

Patrick J. Deneen is a professor of political science at the University of Notre Dame, where he has taught since 2012. He is the author or editor of eight books and dozens of articles on a wide range of subjects. His bestselling 2018 book Why Liberalism Failed has been translated into over 20 languages and was recommended by former President Barack Obama. Deneen previously taught at Princeton University and Georgetown University and served as Special Assistant and Speechwriter for the Director of the United States Information Agency from 2005-2007.

His lecture titled We are All Postliberals Now will discuss how both the political left and right’s shift toward illiberalism is actually an intensification of liberalism, leading to a postliberal age and the question of what kind of postliberalism will emerge. Following his lecture, Deneen will be joined by Andrew Valls, faculty senate president, and Scott Vignos, vice president and chief diversity officer, who will moderate a Q&A discussion. Register here to attend the May 13 event with Patrick J. Deneen.

The lecture is free, open to the public and will be streamed on live.oregonstate.edu. The Democracy in Action series is presented by the Office of the Provost.

I hope to see you there.

Belinda Batten

Interim Provost and Executive Vice President
