Dr. Roy Haggerty appointed as Provost and Executive Vice President

May 13, 2025

Dear OSU Community Members,

I am delighted to share that Dr. Roy Haggerty has been named the university’s next Provost and Executive Vice President. He will begin his new role on July 7.

Roy, who was selected after a national search, currently serves as the executive vice president and provost of Louisiana State University (LSU). Before joining LSU, he spent 26 years at Oregon State University, where he held several leadership positions including dean of the College of Science, interim dean of the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, and associate vice president of research.

An environmental geologist, Roy is a Geological Society of America fellow. He has led research projects totaling $9 million and has published 75 peer-reviewed articles, predominantly in hydrology. He is widely known for his development of the smart tracer, a molecule that moves with water while it senses and records valuable information about the environment. Roy received a Ph.D. and M.S. in hydrogeology from Stanford University and a B.S. with first class honors from the University of Alberta.

As provost and executive vice president, Roy will lead a comprehensive portfolio including OSU’s academic colleges, several administrative divisions and offices, and the OSU-Cascades campus in Bend.

His vision and leadership come at a pivotal time, as we continue the implementation of our strategic plan, Prosperity Widely Shared, and elevate Oregon State’s global identity as a top public university that fuels a thriving world through research, innovation and student success. Roy’s creativity and forward thinking will play a vital role in OSU’s future.

I extend my gratitude to Search Advisory Committee Chair Tuba Özkan-Haller, dean of the College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, and the entire committee. Their dedication and expertise were invaluable throughout this process.

I also want to express my sincere appreciation to Belinda Batten, who graciously stepped in as interim this spring.

Please join me in welcoming Roy back to Oregon State University.

Sincerely,

Jayathi Y. Murthy
President
