Murthy’s priorities are reflected in the 2024-30 strategic plan: improving access, student success and graduation  rates; growing the university’s culture of inclusive excellence; expanding OSU research and research infrastructure; and supporting faculty excellence in teaching, research, and Extension and engagement programs.

Murthy came to Oregon State from UCLA, where she served as the Ronald and Valerie Sugar Dean at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. As its first woman dean, she prioritized expanding access to a UCLA engineering education, particularly for women and underrepresented populations.

Previously, Murthy served as a professor of mechanical engineering and in leadership roles at the University of Texas at Austin, Purdue University, Carnegie Mellon University and Arizona State University.

Murthy also spent a decade in private industry at Fluent Inc., developer of the world’s most widely used computational fluid dynamics software. She led development of algorithms and software that still form the core of the company’s products.

Murthy holds three degrees in mechanical engineering, including a bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, where she was named a distinguished alumna in 2012. She earned a master’s degree from Washington State University and a doctorate from the University of Minnesota.
