One of OSU's biggest priorities is increasing retention and graduation rates for students of color, first-generation, and Pell-eligible students. The literature and experts in the field concur that a well-designed faculty-student mentor program can be useful for these goals, especially in students’ first year on campus. A key recommendation of the Undergraduate Student Success Steering Committee is that OSU do a better job of supporting our students in their first year at OSU, whether they are new to college or transfer students. The Faculty-Student Mentor Program pilot was launched in September 2018 to support these efforts. The pilot program ran from September 2018 - June 2020.
Now named Beaver Connect, the program is officially housed under the Educational Opportunities Program (EOP) and continues to serve students of color, first-generation, and Pell-eligible, and transfer students in their first year at OSU. More information is available at the EOP Beaver Connect site.
